Car manufacturers became interested in the TCS-system only in the second half of the 60s, due to the arrival of electronic technologies in the automotive industry. There are still some debates about the Traction Control System because of its ambiguity, but despite this, the technology has taken root and has been actively used by all leading automobile companies for about 20 years.  The effectiveness of the Traction control system has been proven by the fact that after testing it on Ferrari speed bolides, it was adopted by Formula 1 teams and is now very widely used in motorsport.

What does TCS mean on a Nissan Maxima?

The TCS electro-hydraulic traction control system is one of the vehicle’s active safety systems and is responsible for preventing slippage of the drive wheels on wet and other slippery surfaces. Its task is to stabilize, level out and improve grip in automatic mode on all roads regardless of speed.

Wheel stripping in sliding happens not only on wet and frozen asphalt, but also during sharp braking, starting, dynamic acceleration, cornering or driving on sections of roads with different traction characteristics. In any of these cases, the traction control system will react accordingly and prevent the occurrence of an emergency situation.

What does a TCS light mean?

Usually, on your 2008 Nissan Maxima the TCS light can remain switched for a few seconds when the ignition switch is in the ON position. The TCS light will flash for a few seconds when the system is automatically turned on when you drive over a slippery surface. The “TCS OFF” light means that the system is disabled  by pressing the TCS OFF button.

The TCS system can indicate a malfunction if the “TCS” light remains switched on even when the driver has not disabled the system or when the car is not on the slippery surface. Corrosion may lead to a faulty TCS system or TCS failure can be the result of the damaged or malfunctioning wheel speed sensors.

TCS can also be damaged due to a malfunctioning TCS or ABS computer which is usually caused by water intrusion, corroded contacts or wrong jump.

What does it mean when the slip light comes on?

VDC  that stands for Vehicle Dynamics Control is a more advanced all-wheel drive system that offers a new level of safety. The SLIP indicator flashes to indicate to the driver that the VDC system is operating.

In addition to the operation of TCS/ABS systems, driver’s steering control and the braking system are monitored by means of a steering angle sensor and a pressure sensor. Also, the current movement of the vehicle (over/understeer rotation) is monitored based on signals from wheel speed sensors and acceleration sensor, etc. This information is used to improve the stability of the vehicle by controlling the brake system and engine. VDC operation can be followed by vibration of the car and brake pedal as well as mechanical vibration. This is not a sign of malfunction.

When the engine is running, sudden tremors and strong vibrations, e.g. when the car is on a rotating platform, on a ship or on a surface with a large gradient, can lead to ABS, VDC OFF and SLIP lights appering. In this case, you should restart the engine on normal road conditions, and if the above mentioned signals turn off, then everything is working as intended.

What does slip mean on a 2006 Nissan Maxima?

On a 2006 Nissan Maxima ABS, TCS and SLIP indicators light when the ECS’s Dynamic Stability Program is running that is used for warning the driver when he is driving on slippery roads with limited traction. System operation may be accompanied by jolts or noise, which is not a sign of malfunction. The indicator flashes for a few seconds after the system stops limiting the vehicle’s wheel spinning.

The ESC is activated in case of a control loss that may or has already occurred. The system stabilises the movement by braking the individual wheels. It is activated when the front wheels drift off the set trajectory in the direction of inertia forces (it usually happens when turning at high speed).  

In this case, the ESC brakes the rear wheel on the inside turning radius, giving the vehicle greater turning radius and guiding it into the corner. At the same time as the wheels are braked, the ESC reduces engine speed.

Also, when you see this indicator light in the dashboard, this could indicate a number of problems, among which are faulty wheel speed sensors, a faulty steering angle sensor, a faulty rotational speed sensor or a problem with the steering rack. It can also be that the traction control system needs to be reprogrammed. In any case, it is strongly recommended to diagnose your vehicle properly.
